Project Development

Our goal is to help landholders determine potential actions they can take to improve soils and productivity of their land.

Soils for the Future is a pioneer in the development of grassland and savanna soil improvement projects. These projects can involve altered grazing, fire and crop management.

We have worked on projects large (2 million hectares (5 million acres)) and small (4000 hectares (10,000 acres) and in North America (western US and Mexico), Africa, and South America. Projects can be short- (1-3 years) or long-term (30 years or more).

Our goal is to help landholders determine potential actions they can take to improve soils and productivity of their land. We can help determine whether such activities can become part of a carbon project that stores greenhouse gases and generates revenues from verified carbon offsets in carbon markets. To achieve these goals we employ a set of modern scientific tools (see Technical Services) that allow any landholder to change management to improve soils.

As to carbon offset projects, SFF, in conjunction with The Nature Conservancy and Fauna and Flora International has developed a new protocol or “methodology” for the Verified Carbon Standard to allow landholders to earn carbon credits by managing fire and grazing in grasslands - click here to view the methodology document. This methodology can apply to almost any grassland or savanna. We also can develop projects that improve and store carbon in tilled agricultural soils.
